Sadaqat-ul-Fitr / Zakat-ul-Fitr (Obligatory Charity at the time of Eid-ul-Fitr):

Sadaqat-ul-Fitr is to be given for every person in your household.  This year, Sadaqat-ul-Fitr is $3.50 per person (1.5 kg of wheat or barley per hadith) for Hanafi school of thought and $7.00 per person (1.5 kg of wheat or barley per hadith) for all other schools of thought. Sadaqat-ul-Fitr should be given to the poor before Eid so they may enjoy Eid celebrations.  Hidaya Foundation (www.hidaya.org) distributes Sadaqat-ul-Fitr before Eid in the form of dry ration.

Fidya (Obligatory Compensation for Not Fasting):

For those who are unable to fast in Ramadan (elderly, sick, handicapped, etc.) a compensation must be given by feeding a poor person (two meals) for every day of fasting not observed. Fidya for each day is $3.50 (1.5 kg of wheat or barley per hadith) according to Hanafi school of thought or $7.00 (3 kg of wheat or barley per hadith) according to other major schools of thought.  Hidaya distributes Fidya among the deserving in the form of dry ration.  Kindly note that Fidya is not for the young, healthy Muslims who occasionally miss fasting in Ramadan due to travelling or temporary illness—they must make-up their fast when they return home or recover.

Giving Zakat is obligatory for every Muslim who does have Nisab (a minimum amount of wealth for one Hijri calendar year which requires a Muslim to pay Zakat). To know more about Zakat, who should pay, on what kind of wealth it should be paid, or how to calculate Zakat, please visit Hidaya Foundation's website: http://www.hidaya.org/publications/all-about-zakat/
