NADEEM MALIK Waves of flood must be met with waves of support from the world. I'm here to urge the world to step up assistance. The flooding in Pakistan was the worst disaster he had ever seen- U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

NADEEM MALIK Five children died of malnutrition on Sunday in the Kundian Valley region of Kohistan. The recent floods and rain had badly affected the Hazara division's Kohistan region, forcing the Karakorum highway and other connecting roads to close down, completely cutting off the region from the rest of the country.

ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN -- Pakistan on Saturday sharply increased its estimate of the number of people affected by this summer's catastrophic floods to 20 million, and the United Nations said that 6 million of those victims lack access to food, shelter and water.

NADEEM MALIK Some experts on the region had recently warned that public resentment of the government generated by the floods could wear away public support for the military campaign against militants, integral to American goals in the region. Those worries only deepened as hard-line Islamist charities rushed to fill the void in hum...anitarian aid left by the government's slow and chaotic response.

Clarridge, a profane former C.I.A. officer who ran operations in Central America and was indicted in the Iran-contra scandal, turned up this year helping run a Pentagon-financed private spying operation in Pakistan. In roughly a dozen countries — from the deserts of North Africa, to the mountains of Pakistan, ...to former Soviet republics crippled by ethnic and religious strife — the United States has significantly increased military and intelligence operations, pursuing the enemy using robotic drones and commando teams, paying contractors to spy and training local operatives to chase terrorists.

NADEEM MALIK While Indian politicians are very upset at the suggestion that the New Delhi metallo-lactamase-1 (NDM-1) infection has been claimed by British scientists to originate in India, the signs are rather clear that it did. India, where medical tourism has been booming lately -- including but not limited to cosmetic surgery -...- seems clearly afraid to loose that business, but some of its own doctors agree with findings of the British scientists who brought this problem to the world's attention.

LONDON (Reuters) - A new superbug from India could spread around the world -- in part because of medical tourism -- and scientists say there are almost no drugs to treat it. Researchers said on Wednesday

NADEEM MALIK The United Nations has estimated that at least one-fifth of the country is flooded, but the scope of the damage seems far greater. About 14 million people have been affected by the floods, and 6 million of them are children, according to Unicef. Estimates of the dead have ranged from 1,200 to 1,600.

Pakistan issued new warnings of floods that could last into the weekend as authorities and aid groups scrambled to confront the toll from a growing humanitarian disaster.

NADEEM MALIK U.S. officials, while refusing to discuss this publicly, are also assessing damage caused by the weak response from Pakistan's civilian government to the floods and mounting hostility toward President Asif Ali Zardari, who stuck to a European trip while waters raged back home."Where we have seen a challenge, is in the ...civilian political leadership and getting it to step up to the plate," said a U.S. official, who declined to be named as his comments were critical of Zardari.U.S. officials repeatedly implored Zardari to return home, telling him this was his "Katrina," a reference to the devastating 2005 hurricane in New Orleans which affected the political fortunes of former U.S. President George W. Bush.Charities with links to militants have taken advantage of the vacuum left in Pakistan and delivered aid to thousands stranded by the floods, possibly boosting their own standing among those communities."A big problem is that while the Zardari government and the international community struggle to get their act together the Islamist militants are already on the ground providing relief," said Pakistan expert Bruce Riedel of the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank.

Bush's Katrina gaffes simply resulted in a Democratic seizure of power, whereas the political fallout from the Zardari administration's incompetence will have far-reaching consequences.
