Musharraf appoints General Kiani as next COAS

Rawalpindi October 2:      Lieutenant General Tariq Majid, has been promoted General and appointed as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. He will assume the appointment with effect from 8 October 2007. Lieutenant General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has been promoted General and appointed as Vice Chief of Army Staff who shall assume charge of Chief of Army Staff on vacation of that office. He will assume the appointment of Vice Chief of Army Staff with effect from 8 October 2007.
            Lieutenant General Tariq Majid was born in Aug 1950 and commissioned in Baloch Regiment in Apr 1971. He is graduate of Command and Staff College, Quetta, Malaysian Armed Forces Staff College, Kuala Lumpur, Asia Pacific College of Security Studies, Hawaii, USA, National Defence College, Pakistan and holds MSc degree in War Studies.
            During his military career, he has commanded Light Anti Tank Unit and an Infantry Battalion, two Infantry Brigades, Infantry Division and has participated in India Pakistan War 1971. He has held various instructional appointments at prestigious training institutions like School of Infantry & Tactics, Command and Staff College and  has served as Deputy Commandant at  Pakistan Military Academy. He has served  as Brigade Major in two Infantry Brigades, General Staff Officer-1 and Director  Military Operations (Plans) in Military  Operations Directorate, Director General in Military Intelligence Directorate and has  been the Chief of General Staff of Pakistan Army. Presently he is Commander 10 Corps Rawalpindi.  The General Officer is very highly regarded as a competent and thorough professional who sets and strives for high standards of excellence.
            Lieutenant General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani,  received his education from Military College Jhelum and was commissioned in Baloch Regiment in August  1971. He has held coveted military appointments throughout his career. He is a graduate of Command and Staff College Quetta, Command and General Staff College Fort Leavenworth (USA) and National Defence College Islamabad. The General possesses wide ranging experience in Command, Instructional and Staff appointments. He has commanded an Infantry Battalion, Infantry Brigade, Infantry Division and a Corps. He has been a member of faculty at School of Infantry and Tactics Quetta, Officers Training School Mangla, Command and Staff College Quetta and National Defence College Islamabad.
            Besides being Chief of Staff Corps he has also held the coveted appointment of Director General Military Operations. He last served as Director General Inter Services Intelligence.
            Imbued with the qualities of head and heart, General is perceived to be a purposeful and pragmatic Commander and embodiment of professionalism. Excellence and perfection remain the hallmark of his personality.
            An avid golfer and a keen sportsman, General is also the President of Pakistan Golf Association. He is married and has a son and daughter.
